Curriculum

Our Department of Teaching and Learning supports the implementation, continuous evaluation, and ongoing improvement of  rigorous, relevant, and standards aligned curricula that establish clear learning expectations for every student. Through collaboration, professional learning, and data informed decision making, the department empowers educators to deliver effective instruction, respond to individual learning needs of our students, and provide equitable opportunities that ensure ALL of our students have the resources and support necessary to succeed.

In Illinois, the Common Core State Standards serve as the foundation for learning expectations in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. In Sandwich Community Unit School District #430, the important distinction is that the standards define what our students should know and be able to do, while the district’s curriculum functions as the resource designed to support our teachers in teaching those standards to our students preK - 12.

Research informed guidance and resources have been provided to our district through two separate statewide frameworks developed by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to support student achievement: the Illinois Comprehensive Literacy Plan, adopted in January 2024, and the Illinois Comprehensive Numeracy Plan, adopted in June 2026. Both frameworks were developed with the goals of strengthening instruction and improving outcomes for all students. In Sandwich #430, we utilize this guidance in selecting quality curricular materials in both English Language Arts and Mathematics.

Within Sandwich #430, we work to make curricular implementation decisions based on the curricular resources that align best in supporting our efforts to achieve our district “Boulders”.
